Teaching writing is hard. Teaching writing to middle schoolers is so hard. Luckily The Persuasive Writer exists!
This workbook provides such an organized framework to support writers of all levels as they grow in the skills of pre-writing, research, outlining, writing, and revising. Each chapter is broken down by skills and includes specific lessons with activities to hone in on each skill. It also includes ways for students to use AI to grow as writers rather than cheat as writers which is refreshing and incredibly timely.
I love how it explains that the elements of an essay are like the ingredients in a recipe and even includes a recipe for snickerdoodles in the appendix of the book. – Nicole W.
I love this book because it is straightforward and thorough. I have used it with some of my tutoring students, and have already seen how beneficial it is. Having them identify the elements of an essay before they write their own rough draft has been extremely effective. I love the analogy to baking cookies, and the recipe in the back is awesome! I am looking forward to using it with more students. It shows them a writing process formula which gives them confidence that they can write their own exemplary essay. – Cathy A.
This workbook bridges the gap between foundational writing skills and higher-level academic expectations. The structure is clear, consistent, and accessible for struggling writers, yet it still challenges advanced students to refine their arguments and strengthen their evidence.
The scaffolded approach to writing the five-paragraph essay makes it easy to differentiate instruction: my special education students gain confidence through step-by-step guidance, while my dual credit and AP students can focus on developing sophistication in their thesis statements and analysis. – Todd B.
